Steps:

Follow the steps on the Developing Collaborative Norms visual. Here are further facilitator tips for each step:

1. Individual (5-10 min): Emphasize the importance of individual input in everyone's voice being included Encourage staff to think about past experiences and what has worked well or poorly in collaborative settings. Ensure a quiet environment for focused reflection.

2. Partner & Small Group (10-20 min): Move around the room to listen in on discussions and offer prompts if needed. Once pairs have consolidated norms, combine pairs into larger groups to further refine and finalize a smaller list. Encourage open dialogue and consensus-building within groups.

3. Whole Group (10-20 min): Arrange the room so that norms can be posted visibly for all to see. Provide each participant with three dot stickers for voting on the most important norms. After voting, lead a discussion to finalize the top 4-5 norms based on the group's choices.

Note: Steps Four and Five could take place at a later time.

4. Unpacking the Norms (10-15 min): Display the final norms prominently. Encourage staff to discuss why each norm is important, how it should be practiced, and the consequences of not adhering to it. Use real-life scenarios to illustrate the application and impact of each norm.

5. Deepening the Norms (10-15 min): Pose reflective questions on maintaining and evolving norms, and facilitate discussions on creating a culture that lives by these norms. Plan for periodic review and assessment of the norms to ensure they remain relevant and effective.

Additional Notes:

Norms can easily become a "checkbox item" with little meaning if they are not actively lived and practiced.

To avoid this:

  • Make norms visible by integrating into agendas, table tents, etc.
  • Recognize and celebrate when norms are upheld.
  • Address and reflect on instances when norms are not followed.
  • Regularly revisit and discuss the relevance and effectiveness of the norms.
