Enrichment and Skill Development
Enrichment and Skill Development Programming
Certain patterns of strengths and needs in a student's learning profile indicate whether or not the student requires special education programs and services. These patterns are determined through comprehensive assessment and indicate the need for:
- Academic Skill Development Programming
- Accessibility Skill Development Programming
- Adaptive Skill Development Programming
- Enrichment Programming
- Social-Emotional/Behavioural Skill Development Programming

Comprehensive Assessment
A comprehensive assessment is required to inform enrichment and skill development programming. A medical diagnosis is also required to inform accessibility skill development programming. A medical diagnosis is not required to inform the remaining programming areas. The comprehensive assessment team considers the student's medical history and any existing diagnosis during the assessment process. A qualified assessor may choose to make a medical diagnosis, if indicated, or refer to a health care professional, if suspected. However, a medical diagnosis does not indicate the need for special education programs and services. Rather, the patterns of strengths and needs associated with enrichment and the four areas of skill development determine the need for special education programs and services. For information on Comprehensive Assessment, see Comprehensive Assessment on the Department of Education Website. |
